The festive season is a beautiful and joyful time of the year, but can be a stressful and emotionally challenging time for many people too. It is a time of high expectations, family gatherings, and financial pressure, which can all contribute to feelings of anxiety and stress.
When you are stressed or anxious your nervous system is in fight or flight. This eats your energy and slows your ability to heal. Meaning your brain and your body are out of balance.
Emotional balance is simple but not always easy. The better you can focus on how and for how long you respond to your emotions the better mental health and the better your health and happiness overall. Here are some tips for maintaining emotional health during the festive season:
Set realistic expectations: It’s important to remember that the festive season doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s okay if things don’t go according to plan or if you’re unable to do everything you had hoped to do.
Take care of yourself: Make sure you get enough rest, eat well, and engage in activities that you enjoy. It’s also important to take breaks and make time for self-care.
Practice gratitude: Take a moment to reflect on the things you are thankful for. This can help to shift your focus from the things that are causing you stress to the things that bring you joy and happiness.
Reach out for support: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to ask for help. Talk to a friend or family member, or consider seeking support from a mental health professional.
Take time for yourself: Make sure you have some time to yourself to relax and recharge. This could be as simple as taking a walk, reading a book, or engaging in a hobby you enjoy.
Christmas can be stressful and anxiety inducing, but it does not have to be. If you are feeling stressed, remember to ask yourself how I can help my mental health? Remember, it’s okay to not be okay. If you’re struggling with your emotional health during the festive season, it’s important to reach out for support and take care of yourself, and give these tips a try.
