I started doing this work after years of struggling with some health problems, to the point where many doctors said I should learn to live with it. Like you, I had tried many different therapies, and finally and luckily ended up with chiropractic. So now I want to help you find the right way back to your best health through chiropractic care.

How fast does time pass you by? Your agenda is full, everything is marked urgent, so you are constantly on the move and forget to take a breath and slow down again. Moving at this pace for a long period can make you feel tired not just physically but  also mentally.

This “business” that you often experience everyday (because of all that you have to do at work and at home) puts a high amount of stress on your body. This stress forces your nervous system  to release stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. You feel your heart beatingfaster, muscles being tight, increase in blood pressure, increase in breathing rate, you may have more headaches or lower back pain, and also a sense of unease. This is known as the stress response, usually only seen briefly in life threatening situations, but when chronically can run your body down. “Having your nervous system in a chronically stressed state is like putting your foot on the gas pedal in your car and driving till you have no gas or you burn your engine out”, says Annika (chiropractic advisor at the Right Chiro). Over time you get the feeling of chronic fatigue in your body which starts to take away from your health and your life. If your body cannot separate from this stress response it disrupts all your body’s normal functions.

This leads to the following common problems:

neck pain

One way to wind your nervous system down and start focusing it’s function on rest and repair is to meditate. Meditation can give you a sense of calm and peace as well as balance in your body. Many people, including the author of this blog post, find it difficult to meditate. The key is to make it as easy as possible in the beginning, this makes the first few times an easy win and will motivate you further to do it. You want to try and build a healthy habit. Here is a list of different ways to meditate, and i have indicated which one I prefer to use:

breath work

1. Breath work:

The goal here is focused breathing. Breathe in for a certain count, hold your breath and then slowly release your breath. There are few ways of doing this, I prefer either box breathing where you breathe in for say 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds and breathe out for 4 seconds, if that is easy then you increase by 1 second and you can keep doing this. The other way I like to do it is best taught by the Iceman himself Wimhoff. 20 to 30 deep breaths through your nose into your tummy and out through the mouth. You want to do these in a speedy succession, almost like you are hyperventilating. Then at the end you take in a deep breath and hold it for as long as you can, then breathe out and hold again. The goal is to get those 2 breath holds to between 45 seconds to as much as 3 minutes. Repeat 3 times and try that everyday.

2. Movement Meditation:

This type of meditation is good for people that like to allow their mind to wander and find peace in doing something. Most people think: “You must mean yoga?” but it can be any kind of movement you really like that is not too stressful on your body. Good examples include walking through the woods,  gardening, and even something like gardening (This is Annikas favorite)

3. Focused Mediation:

This is a sensory orientated type and it utilises focusing on any of your 5 senses. This can range from touch like counting mala beads, listening to music or a music bowl or staring into a flame. The aim is to solely focus on the sense at hand for a period of time. At the start it will be difficult to keep focus, start slow with a minute or two and then increase the time.

4. Guided Meditation:

Guided by either a video or someone’s voice. The guiding is done by an instructor taking you through the stages of the meditation ranging from focusing on your senses to your ideal day and things you are grateful for. This is used by people who struggle to maintain a focused mind, whose thoughts are often racing, and is one of my favorites too.

In many of the old traditions and schools of thought, like Buddhism, the word meditation is equivalent to that of sport. This is a “sport” that is used to train your mind, and give you peace within it. “Training your mind, like training your body, leads to better health and discipline which I think is something we all need more of”, said Justin (owner and chiropractor of The Right Chiro).

Here are some common benefits seen with disciplined practice of meditation:

“Did you know meditation does not need to be that long, and is like a super food for your mental health?” Well now you do, and it only has to be a short while everyday to give you the most profound benefit. It allows you to take a break from your heavy and busy schedule to prioritize your health, so that you can get back to being awesome and taking care of business.  Start meditating today to give your body some mental clarity.
